The Verdict — Myth-Busting Series

The Verdict
Every endurance sport runs on advice that circulates for years before anyone checks it properly. Salt tablets prevent cramp. Gels are only for race day. Natural means unlimited. Fat adaptation replaces carbs.
Some of it is true. Some of it is half-true. Some of it is intuitive and reassuring and wrong.
The Verdict is seven episodes — one myth each, checked against the primary evidence, with an honest conclusion even when that conclusion costs us a sale.
Phase 1 — Foundations
Natural Doesn’t Mean Unlimited
❌ BustedAbsorption is transporter-limited, even in healthy people. “Natural” describes where the fuel came from. It says nothing about how much of it you can absorb.
Gels Aren’t Only for Race Day
❌ BustedThe gut is trainable. Saving gels for race day means asking an untrained gut to perform under maximum stress for the first time.
More Caffeine Doesn’t Mean More Performance
❌ BustedThe benefit plateaus. Past a moderate dose you collect the jitters, the racing heart, and the gut trouble — without any extra speed.
Phase 2 — During Exercise
Gels and Sports Drinks Together: What Actually Causes the GI Distress
⚠️ Partly TrueThe discomfort is real. The cause is carbohydrate load and concentration — not the act of combining two products.
Salt Tablets Prevent Cramp
❌ BustedCramp is mostly a fatigue problem, not a salt problem. The fix that reliably stops a live cramp — stretching — does nothing to your electrolytes.
Phase 3 — Performance
Carb-Loading Isn’t Pasta the Night Before
❌ BustedLoading is a day or two of sustained high intake. One dinner arrives too late and delivers too little — and mostly just leaves you heavy at the start.
Fat-Adapted Athletes Don’t Need Carbs
❌ BustedFat adaptation burns more fat. It also makes you less economical at race pace. The benefit plateaus where you need it most.
