You're holding a gel that says "protein" on the front. Three grams, maybe four. And the cynic in you — the one who's seen every supplement label dress up a rounding error as a feature — quietly wonders: is this real, or am I being upsold a peanut?
Good instinct. Let's settle it. Here's the honest answer, up front: the protein in a peanut honey gel is a small, real bonus — not the main event, and definitely not a protein supplement. This post explains what those few grams actually do on a long session, what they don't do, and who the gel is genuinely useful for. No hype. If the science doesn't back a claim, we'll tell you.
First, what's a gel actually for?
An energy gel has one core job: deliver carbohydrate — fast-usable fuel — to your working muscles during exercise. That's it. Everything else a gel contains is secondary to that one purpose.

That sounds promising — and it is — but the honest footnote matters: when it comes to actually crossing the line faster, the evidence is mixed. Several studies found no clear improvement in time-trial performance from adding protein versus carbohydrate alone.[2] So the fair summary is this: protein's role in endurance is mostly indirect — supporting recovery and reducing muscle wear — rather than directly making you faster on the day.[3]
Bottom line: protein during long efforts is a recovery-and-repair helper, not a speed booster. Anyone selling it as a performance miracle is overselling.
How much protein are we talking about?
This is the part most marketing conveniently skips. The studies showing benefits from carbohydrate-plus-protein typically used meaningful doses — often around 0.4 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight per hour. For a 70kg runner, that's roughly 28 grams of protein an hour.[1]

Is peanut protein any good?
Peanut butter brings a respectable amino acid profile — amino acids being the building blocks your body uses to repair and build muscle. It's particularly decent in leucine, the amino acid most involved in signalling muscle repair.
One honest caveat, though: peanut protein is not a "complete" protein. That term means a food contains all the essential amino acids in good amounts. Peanut butter runs a bit short on one called methionine — so on its own it's slightly less efficient for muscle repair than, say, dairy or egg protein.[4] In practice this matters very little for 3 grams in a gel, but we'd rather tell you straight than imply more than the food delivers.
The peanut also brings fat — healthy unsaturated fat — which does two useful things: it makes the gel taste like actual food rather than sweet syrup, and it slows digestion slightly, which some athletes find sits more comfortably on longer, steadier efforts.

- Longer sessions (90 minutes or more). This is where the small protein and fat contribution, and the more food-like taste, are most welcome — and where the indirect recovery angle has the most relevance.

And who it's not for: if you need rapid, immediate carbohydrate for a short, sharp, high-intensity effort, the fat in the peanut slows things down slightly — a faster, pure-carbohydrate option suits that job better.
The Singapore angle: taste matters more in the heat
There's a practical local point here. A less-sweet, more food-like option in your fuelling rotation can genuinely help here — not because it's nutritionally superior, but because the fuel that you'll actually keep eating when it's hot is the fuel that works. A gel you can't face at kilometre 30 does nothing for you, no matter how good it looks on paper.
